The NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons has helped Lifeline launch its bushfire helpline, saying 'It’s OK to cry, it’s OK to hurt' | Laura_R_chung

Mr Fitzsimmons said that, when he first joined the service, mental health wasn't discussed. Instead, there was an attitude of "just grow up, man up and move on".He said he wasn't "ashamed" to say he had reached out for help and that his wife, Lisa, and two children had been a big help.

"I'm asking people who feel under stress, who feel traumatised to pick up the phone and ring 13 HELP," he said. "There's no shame in having a mental illness; there's no shame in being traumatised or stressed." "I stand before you as a traumatised person," he said at the fundraising lunch. "No matter where you come from in life, it doesn't matter if you've been a dairy farmer for generations or a young mum or a captain of a bushfire brigade, we all have to go and seek this support.""We've got to stop trauma becoming long-term mental illnesses - I don’t want to see depression being the second scourge of this fire.

Laura_R_chung No it is not okay for a man to cry. It implies loss of control over emotions. Better to use reason as sign of competency in the desire to deliver empathy

Laura_R_chung Where is Sherele Moody with the greens Larissa Waters endorsement stating that members of the RFS beat their partner now?

Laura_R_chung enough already. just make him Prime Minister!

Staggering amount raised by fire concertA star-studded line-up has hit the stage for Fire Fight Australia, raising millions of dollars to help with bushfire recovery efforts. I can only hope that this money gets to those who were affected by the fires. It seems that of all the millions raised by the genrous Aust Public and the Govt handouts very little seems to be flowing to those in need. Broken country.
