‘It’s incredible’: Australia’s plan to resettle Afghan refugees through football | Dominic Bossi

For almost two years, Hussain Ramazani did his best to escape the cruel reality of life inside Nauru detention centre. He was sent there in 2010 after fleeing Afghanistan to seek asylum in Australia having travelled by boat.

“Inside the detention centre, too many people had mental problems so I organised football to make them busy,” he said. Over the past nine years, Ramazani has dedicated himself to the Australian AFG Football Association. It has no official status. It operates well away from the umbrella of sanctioned football but provides a significant role in helping Afghani migrants connect, play and be promoted within their community.

Can a few of them also be sent to farms to pick crops? At a farm where there is accommodation. They would be earning money and learning English and adjusting to life in Aust. Like some went to Young,NSW a few years ago to work in the tannery /abatoir. It was successful.

Great idea
