A high school program for Indigenous girls is witnessing improvements in attendance and behaviour by linking cultural identity with academic achievement.

Girls Academy works within schools to help Indigenous girls to attend school and overcome obstacles to complete their educationOrara High School has observed increased attendance rates and improved behaviour from students in the program

"The program is angled to target culture and what that entails is identity; being a young woman in today's society and what it means to be Aboriginal in today's society," said program development officer, Heather Duncan."I have girls turning up to school even when it's raining. She said if schools wanted academic success for Indigenous secondary students they also needed to think about the students' personal and cultural wellbeing at school."Some students come from very challenging backgrounds," Dr Holt said."Sometimes schools are the only place to be able to provide that."

"A lot of communities are really stepping up and sharing those cultural practices and the young ones are feeling pride in it," she said.Emma Torrens is a Year 11 student at Orara High School and a member of the recently formed Balmuun Jindas Indigenous Girls Academy.

Boys left behind as usual.

This does little for gender equality. Stop putting one gender on a pedestal. These indigenous academies should be for boys and girls.

ABC news, might be worth noting a few things; - Current govt has cut $500 million from Indigenous funding since 2013 - Girls academies getting less $ than boys.

I mean..maybe that is ingrained in the Indigenous culture/worldview/genetics to fundamentally not necessarily have the desire to 'achieve' in the sense that the Westernised/White capitalistic/materialistic society. Do any of you dimwit 'enlightened progressives' ever think that ?

The Chinese have cracked that nut: no attend school = ass whooping = 'makes me want to come to school'

Degenerate race.

While this is a good start to closing the gap, there is so much more that needs to be done. The indigenous community is disadvantaged in so many ways in THEIR OWN country- the owners of the land. Closing the gap is going to take more than what Scott Morrison has predicted.

I don't think lowering standards is really going to achieve anything positive
