The NRL says any return of the policy won’t even be considered until the end of the season - and it will need strict parameters if deemed suitable.

The NRL says a return of five-minute sin-bins would only ever be considered with strict parameters on what fits the criteria after league legends Andrew Johns and Billy Slater gave their support to the idea.

The Bulldogs were the latest to learn of the massive ramifications of being down to 12 players for 10 minutes, surrendering a six-point lead to trail by 12 once Jeremy Marshall-King returned to the field in their Good Friday loss to the Rabbitohs. The Australian Rugby League Commission will be able to consider the five-minute sin-bin later this year if it warrants a return in 2023, but NRL head of football Graham Annesley cautioned it would have to come with defined guidelines.

Penrith’s Dylan Edwards and Brisbane’s Keenan Palasia were also sin-binned during round six after the pair slapped each other in a minor scuffle during the premiers’ thumping win on Friday night.Eighth immortal Johns and Queensland State of Origin coach Slater agreed a 10-minute sideline stint was too harsh for some offences, with teams so adept at exploiting an extra man and swinging a result during the ensuing period.
