Investigators are looking into whether speed was a factor in the fatal derailment of a passenger train 50 kilometres north of Melbourne.

John Kennedy, 54 and his pilot a 49-year-old Victorian man died when their XPT came off the tracks on a journey from Sydney.

The train carrying 160 passengers was meant to slow down to 15 kilometres to divert through a crossing loop at Wallan before it derailed. Four carriages shot at least 10 metres off their normal trajectory and eleven passengers were injured. A preliminary report will be released in one month. Image: Twitter/ Rickard_Scott

Speed will have to be a factor, if the track was substandard then speed had to b greatly reduced. If it was not then speed had 3 b an issue. Please do not just blame the drivers coz they r dead.

Victoria the third world state haven’t maintained the line, Andrews is a mess and Victoria is on its knees.
