Indigenous journalism grant for The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age

The Herald will hire an Indigenous photographer and journalist with the Neilson grant.The reporters will initially be hired for a 12-month period, providing in-depth reporting and contextualisation of Indigenous life and culture, with the aim to employ them full-time thereafter.

"The institute believes that the best way to champion quality journalism is to help journalists do more of it,” he said. Ms Neilson, who owns the White Rabbit Gallery – a collection of contemporary Chinese art in inner Sydney – established the $100 million journalism institute last year. "As an avid consumer of news, I recognise the need to support evidence-based journalism and the pursuit of truth in an increasingly complicated and confusing world,""I know that traditional forms of journalism are going through massive change and Australian journalism and intellectual life needs a shot in the arm."

If you were employing a science journo, you'd refuse an applicant who has no background in science. For an Aboriginal perspective you need a educated applicant who knows something about it and has access to information. That isn't going to be a non Aboriginal person.

Why couldn’t this say, “We are recruiting journalists. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander journalists are encouraged to apply” Instead of focusing on recruiting a race? If this said “We are recruiting African journalists” then there would be a huge backlash.
