The data suggests omicron has passed its peak in the British capital, and it’s starting to feel that way. But what will normality feel like, this time?

over illegal gatherings in Boris Johnson’s Downing Street garden during the ultra-stringent 2020 lockdown.

In my neighbourhood, which was the country’s omicron epicentre and is quite poorly vaccinated, the virus is still mopping up the remaining corners. Just this week, we were notified that another boy in one of my sons’ classes had tested positive. But the news elicited barely a shrug from his classmates or their parents. A month ago, omicron was: if you didn’t have it yourself, everyone you knew had it.

Later, though, I got a WhatsApp from a friend, who was having an evening drink in a pub in Brixton – a youthful and exuberant suburb a couple of miles from the city centre. It was a video: maskless punters, mostly young, had sprung up and created an impromptu dance floor. It was like the old days. The threshold moment is January 26, when the government will probably relax the formal restrictions, such as they are. It’s not clear that everyone will immediately go back to work, throw a party or hug a stranger. Some caution has become ingrained.

CroweDM Why did they give him a visa in the first place? He was being coy about his status for months and could easily have been flagged as a person requiring closer scrutiny. The government has bought Australia into disrepute with their own incompetence. CroweDM Exactly. So political lenses dictate what happens to individuals.
