Credit:Environment Minister Lily D’Ambrosio was at Moorabool, near Geelong, on Wednesday morning to officially launch the operation of the Big Battery. She said 80 per cent of its capacity would be reserved for moments when the state’s power supply was under high stress, when it would be able to power more than 650,000 homes for an hour.

“We have to be ready, and this is part of our new scheme. We need new energy technologies that can safeguard our system and provide smart solutions as we transition to renewable energy.” “The race towards renewable energy and decarbonising our energy system must sit alongside these important technologies.“And this is a signal to anybody who is interested to invest in Victoria, in Australia: come to Victoria, the door is always open, our ambition is your ambition.”

The Big Battery is three times bigger than the initial size of the Tesla big battery built in South Australia in 2017 by billionaire Elon Musk.

sumeyyailanbey Is there any data on net environment benefit end to end, raw material to finished product between rare earths used for batteries and other fuel sources e.g. hydrogen etc as some data indicates it is very energy intense to mine with approx. 70% wastage.

sumeyyailanbey Can the battery be used to keeping pumping into the grid to bring power costs down and not used only for the rare occasions of Grid instability or it will be like the billion dollar desal plant no real community or environment benefit.
