This year close to 270,000 packages were found, amounting to around 400 million cigarettes. 9News

As new laws come into effect from today, 9News shows you what will happen to millions of illegal cigarettes.

“Everyday amazes you on what people bring through the mail,” Australian Boarder Force’s Neil Singh said. But, in the past three years, officers have detected more than 61,000 illegal tobacco products. This year close to 270,000 packages were found, amounting to around 400 million cigarettes.“Criminal syndicates are using this, cause with the revenue and the prices of tobacco out there on the streets - obviously people will try any means to bring it through,” Mr Singh said.

Under the new laws tobacco products are classified as "prohibited imports" - meaning if the duty is not paid by those receiving the goods - they'll end up in a secret location where they're then destroyed.

Tobacco, instead of worrying about the damaging effects of the illegal tobacco and the fact that it lacked quality control this government was more interested in the tax they were missing out on. Where the hell is their priorities?

This is nothing but trying to get more tax from people with the taxation of tobacco products.
