The voice at the other end of the line is calm and assured, informing the woman in a friendly British accent that her credit card details have been used to try and make a transaction in Mexico.“We do need to go ahead and cancel your card and send you a new card ... I do need to take you through quick security just to confirm I’m speaking to the account holder.”
The audio of this call, which took place in May this year, was released by Westpac as the Sydney-based bank warned of a spike in reported scam activity. Westpac general manager for fraud prevention and financial crime Chris Whittingham said “call spoofing” – where scammers use software to mask their phone number with the number of a known business – was a commonly employed tactic in impersonation scams.
SimoneFoxKoob Ha ha ha I stopped picking up calls from unrecognised numbers 10 years ago and report these as spam calls / message to train the anti-spam/scam AI. These AI are pretty good - pity they don't deployed it in an offensive manner i.e. to prank call them back like some in Youtube.
SimoneFoxKoob I had this call the other day. Obviously an Indian scammer. Wouldn’t accept I wasn’t a Westpac customer. Then when I told him I’d been to India and seen how they take care of their streets, so I have absolutely not trust in him taking care my money. He went off. Funny as phuq!🤪
SimoneFoxKoob Warning signs often: say their name is something like James Walker, yet have an accent, often Indian. use incorrect grammar, especially plurals eg softwares instead of software. ask what type of phone or PC you have. Clincher is get rude or aggressive when challenged.
