As a privacy professional, I would normally be among the first to join the barricades opposing the new COVIDSafe app, which helps alert people who have come into contact with a COVID-19 case. But we’re in a genuine emergency. And the norms are out the window.Credit:Our government has long tended to put national security ahead of privacy and has a poor track record of technology deployments.
For all the talk of “lost trust”, the Morrison government has done something big to earn my co-operation: it abandoned its fiscal ideology and without much fanfare went into enormous debt to safeguard Australians’ health and jobs. The app doesn’t track anyone but merely records when pairs of users have come close. By notifying people that they’ve been exposed before they show symptoms, community infection is reduced.Mick Tsikas
This is NOT about privacy!! This is about giving the govt the PRECEDENT AND MANDATE it is looking for! Do you not get this? There is no such thing as a temporary govt program! They want precedent and your handing it to them on a silver platter!
It might be a good thing when it gets through legislation and all that data your phone is storing is of some use. Afraid that this app is just another marketing exercise released well before it and it's ability to achieve anything was sorted. ScottyFromMarketing strikes again
I'm more reluctant to download the COVIDSafe app for technical reasons, not privacy reasons. Still unconvinced.
weltlingermusic Has the legislation to protect users and their data (& with a sunset clause) been passed in federal Parliament yet? If not, why not? It is not a lot to ask.
Only an idiot would !
A privacy expert is not a scientist/epidemiologist...the app is just a tool to help trace who has been tested and are positive (at a point in time)...I will wait for the medical experts to give us a tick on our testing before I download
How many times does this have to be said? It doesn’t work on iPhones
Oh bully for you!
wont be hiring him !!!! spud
Who's paying this privacy expert?
Low uptake reflects a lack of trust in the government, not the app.
How much is lockstep getting to say this is OK Steve_Lockstep ? Got another expert troyhunt saying he is from MicrosoftAU saying all is well, but the app doesn't work. Data isnt protected in the USA. ABC says no BBC says no
Great article. Will it change minds? Doubtful. I've spent many hours discussing/enlightening the concerns about this app and found only some of it is genuine concern for privacy. Most of it is the moron element being stupid on social media for want of nothing better to do.
Privacy for app *users* doesn’t appear to be a concern, but privacy for those who test positive and then submit that information could be. The positive test will need to be stored centrally, some people may be concerned their health status could be leaked or hacked.
Come on, if there is so much privacy concerns then sell the ‘smartphone’ and buy nokia 1100. By just having smartphones, forget about much privacy. Fb, maps, google, any browser, even this tweet you are seeing, twitter!! all of them have your location access!!!
They're all on the government's payment list, as long as they spruik their propaganda, and dont hold the government to account for anything
BREAKING A privacyexpert says that 15 minutes has nothing to do with transmission of COVID19Aus; It doesn't take 15m to pass on a cold or the flu, just a cough or a sneeze. Privacyman sez Dutton has always said he wants to remove rightofassembly. Go figure, he says.
How much is the Government paying you for this piece?
Yeah, I'm a privacy expert as well...... And..... no.
