The 26-year-old from Brisbane and her husband Matthew can no longer keep affording to fork out thousands of dollars for her endometriosis surgeries on top of the $5000 a year they already pay for their private health insurance.
She’s had to wait more than three hours for pain relief presenting to a public emergency department compared with five minutes in the private system.“But at the same time I can’t afford to keep it because it doesn’t cover anything. Mrs Nix said on one occasion she was in so much pain her doctor made a decision to perform surgery on the spot, a luxury she wouldn’t get in the public system.
“We just can’t keep affording to pay for surgeries, so my husband and I have made the decision if by the end of the year I’m still in pain that’s what I’m doing,” she said.
These health funds are rip-off merchants of doom.
It’s an ongoing issue with the private health sector. It’s something that needs to be addressed. I too was left $7000 out of pocket for surgery despite paying similar premiums. It’s beyond a joke.
