Josh Frydenberg believes people in their 50s and 60s will have to learn new skills to continue contributing to the economy. Retired teacher Ian McLean thinks the Treasurer is effectively telling prospective retirees what to do with their lives.

Retired Penrith primary school teacher and librarian Ian McLean was on the train to the city to learn more about his new profession – as a remedial masseur – when he read Josh Frydenberg’s comments about the economic time bomb that is older Australians.Retired teacher Ian McLean is learning a new skill as a remedial masseur but wants to go back into the workforce on his own terms.

"I'm doing it myself, to keep my mind active and to learn a new skill. I wouldn't do it just because I need to keep working. It's my choice," he said. Mr Frydenberg re-energised the debate about Australia's ageing population in a speech on Tuesday in which he warned of an economic and fiscal timebomb facing the country.

This has proved to be ineffective. The facts are apart from not enough jobs, everyday businesses are closing. Employers want younger employees we know that. Delaying the old age pension, making restrictions on 50 plus is about cost cutting. Not rocket science. Transparent Auspol

It sounds tough but being unproductive for 30+ years of your adult life is hardly sustainable

I am not surprised anything this gov says not too many bright sparks there

Well. Yeah. They will need to generate income from somewhere once the govt raises the beating age for superannuation redemption won’t they?

I've got $100 that says scomo doesn't work past 65 and neither will this flog.

Josh is just a muppet, the public service has told him Newstart costs the government less than age pensions. This clown looks like a bowling ball and is about as sharp.

Where's Scott-MrSlogan-Morrison's 'stronger economy' that he and the Libs spruiked ad nauseam in answer to every question in Parliament and every interview? 😂😩

Well you fools Voted for him so Suck it up

Josh is just telling it as it is. Country is going broke with ageing population. Same problem no matter what party in power.

No boomers in my workplace

My new skills will include sleeping in, lots of travel and much research on which eateries cooks the nicest brekie and makes the best coffee

If people are going to live into their 80's they cant retire at 65 and spend 20 years on the government pension. We cant afford it, not with all the franking credits, negative gearing and capital gains discounts the boomers want.

JoshFrydenberg will have to learn news skills when he's kicked out of politics by the Australian public for being a CCP lackey and selling out Australia to China.

JoshFrydenberg this isn’t reasonable. Many Australians have worked hard and saved; they don’t deserve this. It’s an election loser. SenatorWong
