In his first interview in Bulldogs colours, Matt Burton has revealed he asked Ivan Cleary for a release from Penrith on two occasions | MichaelChammas SMHsport

Star Canterbury recruit Matt Burton has revealed he asked Penrith coach Ivan Cleary for a release from the Panthers on two occasions last year, but said he had no regrets after joining the Bulldogs as a premiership winner.

“Yeah I did ask to leave,” Burton admitted for the first time. “A couple of times, actually. Obviously Jarome [Luai] and Nathan [Cleary] were the halves there at the time and I wanted to play in the halves. The Dubbo junior was arguably the best centre in the competition in 2021, winning a premiership on his way out of the Panthers.“It certainly would have been beneficial for us if we had him last year,” Barrett said.

“That’s part of the game,” Burton said of the expectation and pressure Bulldogs fans will place on him.
