Exclusive: The Berejiklian government concedes the cost of its signature metro rail project under Sydney Harbour and the central city is set to blow out by up to $3 billion | Mattonews

Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Transport Minister Andrew Constance at a metro site in August. While rejecting that it will blow out by that much, Transport Minister Andrew Constance said he expected it to cost $2 billion to $3 billion more than original forecasts."It won't be $4 [billion extra] but I would expect it to come in at $2 to $3 [billion] ...

"If you go back five years ago, I think it's fair to say that not even Treasury could predict the escalation increases in the infrastructure market. And it's not just in Sydney," Mr Constance said, citing blowouts in transport"There has been an overheated infrastructure market for contractors and, of course, that means that ... it has been very much an uplift for suppliers as opposed to procurers. [But] I am not trying to pass off the buck here.

He also said "three different waves in the property market" had affected the cost of the project, because land needed to be acquired for it.

Mattonews Rail is still better than more roads

Mattonews Koalakiller is a real dud, keeping up with the conservative liberal tradition.

Mattonews STEP DOWN YOU USELESS MINISTER

Mattonews Well , we better start ripping up the light rail in George Street than . That will save money, won't it 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪

Mattonews Sorry just doesnt cut it. Who writes these ridiculous contracts.

Mattonews Yeah, they look real sorry. They are about to destroy some of the most historic parts of Sydney in the name of more traffic on our roads. Why are our politicians so terrible at governing.

Mattonews The Circus is in town. Oh wait, no, it’s the NSW government wasting billions again. You can see though how it’s easy to confuse the two.

Mattonews Hen she was TOLD by numerous studies not to proceed with the project because it was NOT viable and would increase congestion

Mattonews Sorry? Is that all? Will probably blow out more by the time it's over.

Mattonews Blame the engineers running the jobs they’re all useless

Mattonews Oh what a surprise

Mattonews 'Sorry'. That's what you say when you buy ordinary milk when the shopping list said skim milk LiberalArrogance nswpol

Mattonews Keep going GladysB and get the infrastructure done right. Don't do a NSW Labor by skimping and getting a bad result. (shout out to ppl stuck in the M5 tunnel!). It is amazing to see our city breathing again with the injection of effective public transport into our city.

Mattonews A billion here..... a billion there, .. sooner or later it all adds up to real money

Mattonews Clearly apologising after the event is this govts MO rather than a thorough planning process. Just why we allow unqualified politicians to make planning decisions is beyond me.

Mattonews Who knew? Who predicted? Who slapped down any criticism? Who disparaged those who challenged the costings? What happened with Westconnex? What with the stadium? Sorry seems inadequate really!!

PCKJ3627 Mattonews Hopefully they have not purchased rolling stock that is too wide .

Mattonews Sorry about that! We live in a kakistocracy .

Mattonews But we still need to waste billions on moving the Power House and replacing a perfectly good stadium......hardly a ‘conservative’ government! Wasteful ‘Progressive Left’ running all the major political parties!

Mattonews I suppose this was already forseen during the planning...this government just relied on the premise that if its already started and ongoing...there’s no turning back anymore anyway

Mattonews I totally understand that these sort of projects can go over budget. 50 million, 100 million, sure, a lot of money, but problems arise. 200 million, maybe half a billion, coarse case scenario. But 3 billion, fuck me, that is just inept. And if you say 3 billion, we know it's 4.

Mattonews Don't these project always have blow-out costs, it's a 'thing' these days, the procurement system in government should be researched and change to cover these extra billions of taxpayers money. It's a con.

Mattonews So they sign concurrent contracts for Westconnex and Sydney Metro then complain of an overheated infrastructure market for contractors. Smart.

Mattonews Premier and Minister must resign. This magnitude of cost over run, on a one off project, is a measure of unbelievable public contracting incompetence. Blaming 'lack of contractors' is imbecilic. Only a handful of contractors ever do works of this nature. auspol abcnews mkr

Mattonews This is another typical project sham .., why cannot projects in the public sector be priced more accurately. Must be a flawed system of project submissions and approvals

Mattonews Ah, that shrewd Liberal economic management at work again I see

Mattonews Oh well, he shows his emotions in public. That alone makes him Premier material!

Mattonews That money could have housed a lot of people waiting on the never-ending NSW 'housing' list. But providing people with a roof over their heads is not on Gladys's agenda. She's an empire builder.

Mattonews Yet another major cost overrun from the minister for media releases. Time to replace him before the state government is irreparably damaged.

BradleyMissus Mattonews This government has had more blow outs then a dodgey batch of condoms.

Mattonews It's just 3 billion, sorry bout that.

Mattonews Just a measly $3 billion dollars

Mattonews Unbelievable

Mattonews What will she cut from the budget? RFS again?

Mattonews There are people getting rich off this, and it isn't the workers.

Mattonews Ha, it's only money to them.

Mattonews Very poor planning - yes. Creating jobs - yes. Putting more money in private enterprise pockets - probably yes too.

Mattonews Resign, in disgrace

Mattonews It’s ok to say sorry but it’s OUR money you baboons keep throwing away

RachelBkr Mattonews Sorry doesn’t pay the $3B+

Mattonews State and federal fiscal f wits

Mattonews Sack your transport minister GladysB - he is completely incompetant - just like the rest of your government
