Zimbabwe's main opposition party, the MDC Alliance, says dozens of its officials have been arrested or gone into hiding after authorities thwarted a planned anti-government protest.

Zimbabwe's military and police are arresting scores of opposition party members and activists after authorities thwarted an anti-government protest last week, according to rights groups.Human rights groups have accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa of clamping down on dissentMore than 60 people had been arrested in the continuing clampdown, said Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, which is providing lawyers for the arrested people.

If state agents did not find the person they wanted to arrest, they often vandalised their homes and harassed their relatives, opposition spokesman Tendai Biti said. On Monday, a judge postponed until Thursday a bail hearing for Hopewell Chin'ono, an investigative journalist who has been in jail for two weeks on accusations of mobilising the foiled protests.

The ongoing arrests were "worrying", said Human Rights Watch director for southern Africa Dewa Mavhinga.

Solomon Lew decries government 'inaction' as retail shutdown announcedBillionaire retailer Solomon Lew has hit out against new limits on retail trade in Victoria, accusing the Andrews government of causing unnecessary damage to the economy. In that, at least, I agree with him. This notion that “we must try to keep things open” does not work clinically or economically. And yes, Premier Berejiklian, if we have to shut down and reopen that is what we must do Well what has Solly been doing other than not paying the rent? I trust his trusted staff are getting the exemplary service and generous consideration he expects of the governments. Solomon Lew
