The death toll from Australia's bushfires increases with the discovery of human remains in a burnt out home on the NSW south coast

NSW Police have confirmed the discovery of human remains, believed to be that of a man, in the fire-ravaged community of Moruya on the state's south coast.

Officials are still working to identify the body, which was found after a large bushfire yesterday engulfed homes."Inquiries are continuing and no further information is available at this time," the spokesperson said. Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Friday announced a state memorial service will be held on February 23 in Sydney to recognise the lives lost, the sacrifices made and those who have been impacted by bushfires this season.

Twenty-four of the deaths have been in NSW, eight of the fatalities involved firefighters. In a ten-hour period alone this week, three American firefighters died and six volunteers injured.
