After a horror outbreak which saw hospitals overwhelmed by COVID-19 patients, officials in the US state of Texas hope the curve is now starting to plateau. But doctors who witnessed the devastation firsthand fear what will happen next.

Doctor Bela Patel vividly remembers her worst day of the pandemic. Her hospital in Houston lost three patients in the space of a few hours.Some doctors say they have not had have enough beds for patientsIt deflated the entire team working in the intensive care unit at Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Centre.

The hospital was housing dozens of patients, all on some sort of ventilation. Some people battling COVID-19 were hooked up to multiple devices to help them breathe.For the latest news on the COVID-19 pandemic read our coronavirus live blog.In more than two decades working in an emergency department, Dr Patel had never seen anything like it."This is 10 times worse than our worst year," she said.

The situation was more of a slow burn in the country's south, with states like Texas, Florida and Arizona recording relatively lower rates of infection.Texas's curve quickly shot up and Dr Patel remembers her team being shocked to have 30 patients at one time.A few weeks ago, during the peak of infections in Texas, they hit 160 patients."We started seeing a steep incline and it was just relentless.

The hospital hired extra nurses, shut down non-essential departments and redeployed health workers from other wards to cope with the surge.
