There is a plan to create a circular plastic economy and the first actions happen this year.

The bulk of the world’s plastic is produced from fossil fuels, and while the use of coal, gas and oil as a source of energy for electricity production has been the focus of climate policy, the use of these resources for plastics has been less scrutinised.

Globally, more than 330 million metric tonnes of plastic is created each year, only 9 per cent of which is recycled., despite increasing consumer consciousness about the environmental costs, and is predicted to double between 2020 and 2060.are created for single-use applications such as food packaging, the rest is for durable applications such as pipes and cable coatings and durable consumer products including furniture and appliances.Australia uses about 3.

This year will see the first steps in enacting the road map, which will culminate, in 2025, in all packaging being reusable, recyclable or compostable; 70 per cent of plastic packaging to be recycled or composted; a fifth of plastic packaging to contain recycled material; and unnecessary single-use plastic packaging to be phased out.

The government has also set a national target to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill by 80 per cent by 2030 and will ban the export of waste plastics, paper, glass and tyres.Sign up to the AFR Weekend newsletter.
