The country's largest private hotel investor, Dr Jerry Schwartz, has unveiled fresh plans to build a helipad on the roof of his Sofitel Sydney property at Darling Harbour in a bid to help kick-start tourism in the wake of the coronavirus.

The Schwartz family owns a significant number of hotels across the country which are leased to operators. At Darling Harbour, the Sofitel is managed by AccorHotels. The property is adjacent to the International Convention Centre and close to the under-construction W Hotel. Dr Schwartz said that as the proposed rooftop helipad would be classified as an "aircraft facility" under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation , an environmental impact statement would be prepared and lodged with the consent authority, the City of Sydney Council, for consideration.
