The world’s strictest border controls have forced the banks to offer special incentives to keep a growing number of disgruntled staff happy.

Australian banks in Hong Kong are seeking to head off an exodus of talent from the financial hub by compensating staff for mandatory three-week hotel quarantine, or granting them special leave to work remotely if they get trapped outside the city.

ANZ Banking Group, which has 300 staff in Hong Kong, has granted its staff ten days personal leave if they find themselves trapped out of the country where they work. However, it is not offering compensation for hotel quarantine as many of the US and American banks are doing for their staff. While Hong Kong remains an attractive hub for bankers, lawyers and accountants because of its proximity to China’s capital markets, headhunters said if the quarantine restrictions dragged on for another year, it would be the final straw for many global companies.ANZ said Hong Kong remained an important base for its Asian business.

“We allow all of our staff to work remotely, subject to regulatory criteria being met, such as the individual having the legal right to work in that jurisdiction.”
