Hammer -wielding assailants attack the leader of one of Hong Kong 's largest pro-democracy groups.

Hong Kong was handed back to China with no framework for what would happen after the year 2047, leaving the city to carve an identity out of two ideologically opposed empires.

In her policy statement — which she later delivered via video link — Ms Lam was unapologetic about her Government's response to the protests, which has included

"Despite the stormy times and overwhelming difficulties Hong Kong is experiencing, I believe that so long as we accurately adhere to the principle of 'one country, two systems', we will be able to get out of the impasse."
