Hammer-wielding assailants attack the leader of one of Hong Kong's largest pro-democracy groups.

They were calling on Ms Lam to accept the demands of protesters, which include universal suffrage for the Chinese-ruled city, an amnesty for those charged during protests, and an independent inquiry into what they say has been excessive force by police in dealing with the unrest.

Hong Kong was handed back to China with no framework for what would happen after the year 2047, leaving the city to carve an identity out of two ideologically opposed empires. Police have arrested more than 2,300 people since June. Thousands have been wounded, including two shot by live rounds.
