Beekeepers warn the price of honey is likely to rise, as the industry recovers from devastating bushfires that have destroyed hives and key foraging country in north-eastern New South Wales.

Beekeepers are warning the price of honey is likely to rise, as the industry recovers from devastating bushfires that have destroyed hives and key foraging country in north-eastern New South Wales.

"I've got just enough hives that if I decide to keep going I could start rebuilding over the next year or two," he said. "It's pretty much decimated most of our business, not just the bees but all of the forest and the plants that we use to make the honey." NSW Apiarists Association president Stephen Targett said the situation in north-eastern NSW was"truly devastating" and given it was one of the large honey production areas, consumers will likely see a price rise.

"In the short term it will definitely reduce the honey production in the state, so you're likely to see a price increase happen in the short term at least," he said."It's not just [bad] for honey production … bees are worth far more to the NSW economy through pollination."

I think it's starting to click with people there's a lot more to climate change than just fires. Entire ecosystems that we humans depend on are being decimated, you can't replant ecosystems. they're unique and once gone, it's forever.

Already risen, lack of foods for bees because of drought. Distressing
