A new documentary about Billie Eilish eschews the familiar tropes of pop star excess in favour of a more grounded, everyday portrait of the teen.

It's one of the curious paradoxes of contemporary pop stardom: social media offers audiences access to the kind of intimate details of performers' lives that would be unthinkable in another era, yet it theoretically affords the stars near-complete control of their public image — allowing them to circumvent traditional media for a direct dialogue with their fans.

That the film is a reportedly multi-million-dollar project funded by Eilish's label, Interscope, tracking her from the beginnings of her stardom through seemingly every aspect of her two-year rise, might raise some questions as to its comprehensive intimacy. But Eilish is also among the first generation of performers born into a completely online world, where — to use the cliche — every aspect of life really is documented for a social media space.

"As our lives became more and more surreal, I thought this would be an interesting thing to watch from the outside," says Finneas O'Connell. The emphasis here is on the real, the connection that Eilish shares with an audience she sees less as fans than peers and almost confidantes; as she tells a concert hall packed with rapt, adoring teenagers, "You're the reason that I'm okay."

Eilish says in one scene, and the camera dutifully pans to the family dog, Pepper, looking concerned.

We’d rather keep our super: Why Sofia is eyeing a home interstateThe increase in the First Home Super Saver Scheme limit isn’t necessarily music to the ears of young workers in Sydney. We need more Tier2Cities and we need them now. Until its just as cool to live in Nowra, Orange, Port Macquarie as it is Sydney, housing=expensive. I have a friend who rents in Sydney. Just bought her first investment property in Adelaide. An inner city house on 700m2 for $560k compared to $1.5m median price in Sydney. We’ve made housing a commodity when in fact it is a human right. What a dumpster fire we’ve created. How the f**k did past generations save and buy houses By hard work & sacrifice without childcare handouts, seriously woke the hell up & stop treating this young generation like they have it so tough! You want it work for it. SIMPLE.
