Home Affairs and Cybersecurity Minister Clare O’Neil has warned Australia faces a raft of national security challenges in coming years, including relentless cyberattacks, foreign interference undermining social cohesion and democracy, and rolling natural disasters caused by climate change.
Mr Penn, who was the head of the former government’s cybersecurity industry advisory taskforce that fed into the current strategy, said that as the rate of digital adoption had accelerated, so had the threat of malicious cyber activity.“Industry clearly has to do better in protecting customer data and implementing cybersecurity best-practice and government must lead by example and demonstrate its own commitment to hardening government systems and defending against cyber threats,” Mr Penn said.
Ms O’Neil backed Medibank’s assessment that the hackers who stole millions of customers’ data had now“From my perspective we stood up to a bully and we won,” she said. Foreign actors were trying to influence decisions in Australian parliaments and universities, and starting “online misinformation and disinformation campaigns which spread like viruses around our communities”.potential targets of foreign interference
