Australia Latest News, Australia Headlines

"Holden will always have a special place in the development of our countries. As Australia and New Zealand grew, Holden was a part of the engine room fuelling that development," said Aquilina.

"Today's announcement will be felt deeply by the many people who love Holdens, drive Holdens and feel connected to our company which has been with us for 160 years and is almost ubiquitous in our lives. "Unfortunately, all the hard work and talent of the Holden family, the support of our parent company GM and the passion of our loyal supporters have not been enough to overcome our challenges."Holden was founded as a saddlery in South Australia in 1856 before moving into building vehicles in 1908.

Holden became a subsidiary of the United States-based General Motors in 1931, beginning the brand's 89 year history as a combined entity.Holden also boasts a strong motorsport presence, the future of which is currently unclear.

Blame the government oh let's build more mines

So, Ford won!....?

You can blame these two

Not surprised, bring something to market people actually want to own. Would rather a Dodge Charger!

Cars aren’t even something to car about anymore anyway. I used to take pride as a kid knowing every shape of every brand and model ... we are headed for the singularity whatever that is... the upside ? Sex Robots ( after I’m dead probably .. ffs )

Considering all of the money pumped into Holden Australia, owned by GM in the USA - good riddance. Japan and Korea manufacture better value for $ vehicles.

No surprises here given how badly Holden sales have tanked in the last few years.

I said in 2011 when they announced they would stop manufacturing cars here they would pull out by 2020. That’s what our politicians have done. Killed manufacturing in Australia!

I thought it was at the end of 2021

Let me add my thanks to all unions who contributed to this situation over many decades. You can take credit for The success of industrial and white collar outsourcing overseas. 👏👏

Bye bye Holden! It was quite an era for Australian manufacturing. Now, tell me about the newest Chinese made virus car. It runs on your cough power! China 🇨🇳

No one wants mod sized cars with big silly engines unless its a proper performance v8.. i.e. the m5 c63.. and to be fair holdens were built rubbish

Another company down. More executives continue to swindle lower paid workers and this trend will continue in many more companies to come cause of affordability.

👎🏻👎🏻👎🏻

Who didn’t see this coming ?

Congratulations JoeHockey Mission accomplished. auspol

Well good because they weren’t getting any of my money for they crap cars the commodore was the only good car they made and that’s gone and so will they

Foreign ownership of Aussie products simply do not work. Thanks to the Government, our icons are slowly fading away. auspol ScottMorrisonMP AlboMP PaulineHansonOz

So with no car manufacturers in Australia, does that mean an end to the luxury car tax?

On the bright side, all you Holden owners will have Chev badges on your cars from factory. No need to make that 'sick' mod yourselves

yeh i see more VW n Toyota's around lately...

9NewsPerth This is what bad management did. Not providing the vehicles we Australians were buying

I'm blaming TonyAbbott for this one.

Fm has been bailed out for decades by every country it has factories in

Yay good

It's a disgrace. The Unions pushed them to extinction by having each man working 3.5 days a week.

Aus shd not be so dependent on other countries..

As a Ford fan, that sux!

What? This does not make sense!

What did they expect after they closed down the plants - the sales dropped even more because no one wants a rebranded Opel - sept 2019 2863 cars sold - nov 2013 3315 sales - the figures aren’t lying - when you abandon australia australia abandons you!

holden is for bogans anyways

I am ashamed to be Australian for the first time in my life... Thank you Australian Govt.

Oh no. Worse than coronavirus. 7NewsAustralia

Holden to be pulled from sale by 2021The iconic Australian car brand Holden is being axed after decades making and selling cars such as the Commodore, Astra and Barina. Thanks Joe Hockey and the Liberals. You’ve lost an industry for no gain but less tax the last vestiges of the local car and related components industry, and technical skills associated with it, which was so completely screwed over by Tony Abbott. But (soon to be automated anyway) mining jobs? Australians to Holden - 😒🖕🏻
