"Our intention was to turn around the brand ... there is zero blame to the local team," said the high ranking General Motors official. "This decision is all about investment priorities."

General Motors has been making a slow retreat from other right-hand-drive countries over the past three years, getting out of lucrative markets such as the United Kingdom, Japan, India and South Africa. The three main remaining right-hand-drive countries were Thailand, Australia and New Zealand, but General Motors says it has become unprofitable to develop new vehicles for such comparatively small markets.

Globally, more than 75 per cent of all vehicles sold are left-hand-drive, while right-hand-drive countries account for the remaining 25 per cent of sales. However, car companies have less opportunities to recoup their investment because the cost to design, engineer and develop left- and right-hand drives is the same.

Great government we have let's ship cars from China

😢 My first car was a Holden ☹️

Let’s use the factory to locally make solar panels

This was expected, wasn’t it. Holden just puts its badges on cars built overseas. It’s terrible it’s come to this and it has cost hundreds of jobs😡

elonmusk Tesla please jump right in, buy that factory and make Y there !

Why should Australia give free money to a US owned company to sell us garbage Korean cars. If I wanted a Korean car we already have KIa and Hyundai.

Was there any doubt that this would happen?

Holden's demise will test even Scott Morrison's ability to spread fairytales over a dung heap

Effect on Supercars Championship?

How many jobs could’ve been spared if .JoeHockey or LiberalAus maintained the same level of subsidies it keeps for coal ...I wonder? 🤔 auspol jobs bettereconomicmanagers

Holden to be pulled from sale by 2021The iconic Australian car brand Holden is being axed after decades making and selling cars such as the Commodore, Astra and Barina. Thanks Joe Hockey and the Liberals. You’ve lost an industry for no gain but less tax the last vestiges of the local car and related components industry, and technical skills associated with it, which was so completely screwed over by Tony Abbott. But (soon to be automated anyway) mining jobs? Australians to Holden - 😒🖕🏻
