Long before Sydney's CBD became the site of office towers and grid-locked traffic, it was covered in bushland | pallavisinghal

On a handful of sunny days every year, Sydneysiders can get a glimpse of what the city looked like before it became the site of office towers and grid-locked traffic.

The tunnel is open to the general public on about four days every year - a tour only accessible via a lottery. For the rest of the year, it still functions as one of the main stormwater drains for the CBD, carrying water and the city's rubbish from Hyde Park to Circular Quay. The tank stream was one of the main reasons Arthur Phillip chose to build his colony in Sydney Cove rather than Botany Bay, where the settlers had access only to the brackish water of Cooks River.
