Bruce Lehrmann’s lawyer spent the week attacking Brittany Higgins’ credibility. The onslaught came to a head on Friday, when defence barrister Steven Whybrow accused her of using doctor’s appointments she never attended to “bolster” her rape claim.
In text messages shown to the court, Higgins wrote in the initial aftermath of the alleged assault that she did not want it to be made publicBut, as Chief Justice Lucy McCallum told the jury on the first day of the trial on Monday, the case had become a “cause célèbre” and took on a momentum of its own.She urged the members of the jury pool to excuse themselves if they were “a member of the party faithful” with a preconceived view of the case.
On Friday, Higgins acknowledged she told people, including Dillaway and then minister Linda Reynolds’ chief-of-staff Fiona Brown, she went to the doctor when she didn’t. They had come from work drinks at a Canberra bar called 88mph and, before that, The Dock, during which Higgins said she’d reached the “point of obliteration”.
She held out her arms as she walked through again before stopping to try and put on her shoes back on. After some trying, she picked them up and continued, barefoot. The footage then cut to a female security guard walking Higgins and Lehrmann down a corridor.
Whyvis this sad tail promoted by a financial newspaper? I'm sure all involved would perfer their privacy at this time.
