Dry and hot weather has seen starving bats die and fall from the sky. 9News

"The message 'don't touch bats' isn't new advice, but it's important advice that people should take seriously," Dr Heidi Carroll, Queensland Health Medical Director of the Communicable Diseases Branch said.

"When people try to move a bat that appears to be dead or injured, that's when they are most likely to be scratched or bitten. "Scratches, bites and bat saliva into the eyes, nose or mouth are very serious and require immediate medical assessment to prevent the potential development of ABLV infection."

Both doctors also urged people who find a dead or injured bat in Queensland to contact the RSPCA or a local wildlife care organisation.Immediately wash any wound with soap and water for at least 5 minutes.- If bat saliva has got into your eyes, nose or mouth, flush the area thoroughly with water.- Contact the RSPCA hotline on 1300 264 625 or a wildlife carer to collect the bat for testing, if it is available.

Even now? Seriously? With all the warning signs of ecosystem collapse - all we talk about is potential disease risk from scratches? When the REAL risk to humans is complete ecosystem collapse. Insect + bird populations have collapsed already - do we think that can end well?

Watch out. The creatures are fighting back.

We found a dead one in the garden (Ferny Hills) a couple of weeks ago. All this week we have had an individual one hanging in a palm tree. Assumed he was displaced by fires. At least he's found a food source but he's all alone.

Hot? Where? It's 12 degrees at my place in S.A.
