Analysis: Americans had grown confident they were emerging from their coronavirus nightmare. Then the projected number of deaths suddenly doubled to 135,000 | KnottMatthew

It has been clear for several weeks the US death count was declining less rapidly than the IHME had predicted. Its model appeared to have a built-in "optimism bias" - a trait shared by American society more broadly.

Cognitive neuroscientist Tali Sharot describes the human tendency towards optimism as "one of the most consistent, prevalent, and robust biases documented in psychology and behavioural economics" - one that is observed across all ages and nationalities.
