As the catastrophic New South Wales fire conditions continue, a Greens senator has branded major party politicians "no better than arsonists". In an extraordinary attack, Senator Jordon Steele-John told the parliament those in favour of the government's 'big stick' legislation should be "ashamed".

“How dare any of you suggest that in this moment at this time it is appropriate to be prosecuting a piece of legislation with the aim of propping up coal,” he said. “You are no better than a bunch of arsonists - borderline arsonists - and you should be ashamed.” Labor Senator Murray Watt called on Mr Steele-John to withdraw his comments, but he refused.
