Public consultations are underway into the possibility of legalizing mitochondrial donation, an IVF technology researchers claim is critical to preventing mitochondrial disease being passed down from a mother to her child.

The process involves two fertilized eggs, one from the mother who carries mitochondria disease and one egg from another woman who does not. The practice is legal in the UK and is currently being considered in Australia. CEO of Mito Foundation Sean Murray has told Sky New this therapy can provide a “beacon of hope” for parents of children mitochondrial disease.
