Transport agency documents suggest cracks on Sydney's inner west light rail trams may have been present for more than a year prior to the trams being pulled from service | Rabe9

The NSW government knew cracks had been discovered in the inner west light rail trams almost a month before they were pulled from service, according to new documents that also reveal concerns within the state’s transport agency that the defect may have been present for more than a year.

Another email sets out to answer internal questions as to what the government was doing for the three weeks between the first cracks being identified by Altrac, the private consortium that operates the service, and the trams being pulled.Louise Kennerley It has come under increased scrutiny for its procurement of overseas built transport stock in recent months after the light rail was suspended amid ongoing problems with Indonesian andOn Tuesday, Sydney commuters faced major public transport headaches with Rail, Tram and Bus Union members refusing to staff overseas-built trains in strike action.

Asked about concerns within the agency that the cracks could be over a year old, the spokesman said: “Altrac has confirmed that all safety critical LRV maintenance was up to date at the time of the identification of the cracks.” Asked whether the 3800 kilometres mean distance between service affecting failure was acceptable, a Transport for NSW spokesman said: “Transdev and Alstom have plans to improve the performance of the vehicles and infrastructure.”Opposition Leader Chris Minns questioned why the government took close to a month to act on information about the cracks.

More cracks were discovered in the trams two days later on October 4, the document says. CAF workers attended the Lilyfield depot to inspect them and on October 18 recommended a deeper investigation into the problem. The TfNSW spokesman confirmed CAF identified cracking in the window and doorframe area of some overseas fleets in 2018, but they did not pose any risk to safety.
