The Morrison government is ramping up pressure on Premier Daniel Andrews to sign up to a $15 billion airport rail tunnel, but the Victorian government has reservations auspol springst

A private consortium, AirRail, is offering $5 billion to build airport rail, which would see dedicated tracks built from the CBD to the airport, via a new rail tunnel to Sunshine. As part of the offer, the consortium would own and operate the tunnel.

The Commonwealth and the Victorian governments, each offering up $5 billion for the project, are locked in discussions about how to best build the new airport train service. This is backed by rail experts and the mayor of Geelong, who warn that using existing train tracks would "jam in" Geelong, Ballarat and Bendigo services on heavily congested rail lines, making airport trains unreliable.“We think it is almost certainly that we'll need to have dedicated tunnel from basically from the CBD to Sunshine, which then becomes a really important node for fast rail to be able to shoot from as well,” Minister Tudge told Sky News Australia late last week.

“Rail Projects Victoria and its expert advisers are still undertaking the detailed planning and development works for Melbourne Airport Rail and faster services to Geelong.

Andrew's is still a recalcitrant union man who would oppose any conservative policy no matter the cost. Great example is the breaking of the Eastern Fwy contract which cost approx $billion to Victorians but no cure All major projects are firmly directed at labour electorates.

So he should

Presumably Angus Taylor has connections to the private consortium as part of this Govt’s usual shonky business practice..?

OK. Let the Feds Pay for it

It should link to the suburban network at the nearest point and make that closer than it currently is (North Melbourne). Brisbane manages this. It’s crazy to punish those who live in the north by forcing us to go into the city or Sunshine and out again.

There is no need for a private consortium to control this. Interest rates so low far better Govt controlled. auspol SpringSt

What about a Queensklif - Sorento bridge ti develop the South?

A fast rail solution for both the airport link and to Geelong is essential. A tunnel does this. Using the existing tracks and mixing with other services will not provide a good solution

Maybe Dan has a side deal with China to go through Sunshine as there is no valid reason to not have a direct link.

2 cockheads Scott Morrison and Daniel Andrews!

It won’t be only car parks that lose money, it will also be taxi drivers, Uber drivers and buses. Tunnel is right but giving ownership and control to a private consortium is not.

He won’t go underground, he couldn’t even do it on the railway crossing removals...

I love what Andrews has done for our state. But ... an airport link has been tried for over 30 years. Why someone makes to much money in car parking. Who ? For Melbourne to be truly international city the link needs to go ahead. Should be a fast train to city not via sunshine.

Sounds to me like someone has some donors who need to be recompensed for their financial assistance... why else would politicians who never catch the train, in a state that is a pain in their arse, care about how and when a rail line gets built.

Gotta love all the big wigs thinking they know what’s best despite only ever commuted once or twice and spend the rest of their life in a car.

Unlike the PM's role which has seen a changing of the guard every time the party prioritises itself and not the country, Dan Andrews has proven himself to be a stable, consistent, hard-working Premier for Victorians. I trust his judgement on this plan.

Im 63 years old, im saying I won't see a train to the airport in my lifetime
