Global heritage body and floodplain councils slam Warragamba Dam proposal | CameronGooley Laura_R_Chung BillieEder

An international cultural group advising UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee has labelled NSW government plans to raise the Warragamba Dam wall as “fundamentally deficient” and at odds with its obligations to protect the area., the Australian branch of the International Council on Monuments and Sites said it strongly objected to the dam proposal.

ICOMOS also said there had been a failure to properly inform registered Aboriginal parties of plans, and there had been inadequate consultation with traditional owners.the Aboriginal heritage report for the state government’s EIS was “manifestly inadequate”. A Penrith City Council spokesperson said more information about the impacts of the dam raising was required and that council was of the view that “irreversible and uncertain impacts for biodiversity have not been adequately addressed in the EIS nor has the potential impacts on water quality and the geomorphology of riparian corridors resulting from the increase in periods of inundation of the upstream catchment”.
