The players’ association is locked in a battle with the NRL for a raft of expensive demands but fans have hit back on social media, saying athletes are already benefiting from a record media rights deal, successfully negotiated by Australian Rugby League Commission chair Peter V’landys, which has led to massive salary cap increases and other investments in the game.
Average Australians are living off just above $68,000 a year and most employers do not foot the bill for private health insurance. Players have indicated they would begin boycotting games if the NRL does not cave to the demands, which fans of the game have slammed as “greedy”.
One of the stumbling blocks is player safety. The NRL have a differing opinion of how to manage safety of the players.
