Broadly, there are four outcomes that could come from today's hearing.
If the court grants Cardinal Pell leave to appeal his convictions, but then dismisses his appeal itself, he similarly remains in prison and must serve his sentence.But if he is granted leave to appeal, and that leave is judged to be successful, his convictions would be quashed and he would be released from prison a free man.
The High Court will today rule on his appeal against those convictions but, because of the changed world delivered by the deadly coronavirus, the High Court will pass its judgment on Cardinal Pell's appeal against child-sex convictions to a near-empty courtroom.

This is such sad news for all victims/survivors. I hope the brave man who came forward about Pell is okay.
I will never set foot in a Catholic Church again, the place is corrupt and full of people like him, look at the cherubs, go on look, what do you see? It says it all.
This is an injustice to all the victims who forever now not have the closure they sought. Every time they walk past a church they will think of him. The Catholic Church should no longer be considered a viable place of worship. Too much abuse has occurred over the years.

Hey all, don't underestimate the High Court Justices. They would have no issues finding anyone guilty....they are seriously smart, experienced people. Like it or not, all 7 agreed there was reasonable doubt. That means there WAS reasonable doubt. His QC Richter was right.

This is a disgrace to our legal system that does not bring justice to victims. In fact it makes legal system a very sick joke. So many have been impacted by Pells behaviour. I feel their sorrow . No justice in Australia !!

Am I the only one who is confused? Was this two judgements? Firstly the right to appeal and then immediately that appeal was decided in his favour ie his conviction was quashed. Or is there an appeal to come or even a retrial?
