'It's nuts': Gas stovetop emissions higher than we thought, causing health and climate risks

Leaking methane from natural gas-burning stove tops is releasing the greenhouse-gas equivalent of hundreds of thousands of cars, and cooking on gas stovetops is posing a risk to health, according to new research.Nitrous oxides, fine particulate matter released during cooking pose a respiratory risk, especially to children

"COVID-willing, we hope to sample in Australia over the next year or two, probably in 2023," said study co-author, Professor Robert Jackson from Stanford University. Previous studies have found methane emissions from gas stovetops to be lower than this one, but they only measured emissions when the stoves were on, Professor Jackson said.According to today's results, gas leaks from stovetop cookers in 40 million homes in the US produced about 28,000 tonnes of greenhouse gases every year, or the equivalent of the emissions from around 500,000 petrol cars.

"It's the most vulnerable that are being hit hardest — the young, the elderly, the asthmatic," Dr Charlesworth said.

Terribly presented data. 40 million homes emissions like 500k cars ? What’s that per house? What’s that per person? How does an essential thing like cooking compare to non essential things like the emissions compare to long haul passenger holiday flight?

Majority of gas stove tops don’t leak. This study is seriously flawed. Moreover, natural gas is injected with an odourant so that we can more easily detect a potential leak. If you can’t smell this, then chances are your stove is OK!

Call the Gas Company to come and inspect it.

Many US cities still use lead lined pipes for water supply. I’m guessing the quality of testing is much less than that of Australia. I know in Victoria, has lines and appliances must pass 2.75X the pressure coming into the house.

Seems to be more pollutant in the air coming from than a gas stove cooker. Let me find a study on that 🤔

Utter crap!! How about China’s coal fired power stations, nothing to do with my occasional stir fry. Please get a grip and get some adult editors rather than these juvenile keyboard warriors who have never had a proper job.

I've been talking client away from gas for years. How's it still legal to build a new home with gas appliances or gas HWS.?

Everything will kill you

My air purifier “goes nuts” when I’m cooking on my gas burners. Monitor goes from, say, 6 to over 300

The ABC recommends using a pair of sticks instead

mmechomski Glad to hear that. Just bought a new electric cooker after considering changing to gas.

Population burns carcinogenic gas indoors to create heat…. Population surprised there is a ridiculous amount of cancer riddled throughout the community. Industry only gives a 💩 about profits, not about the health and welfare of those filling their pockets.

All BS

I call bullshit.

Loved it years ago, but after watery eyes and sniffy nose, I neve cook without the exhaust fan on, and it’s OK. But planet wise… not great letting all the gas byproducts flow out my roof.

waiting for the day that oxygen is announced as a health risk and for people to stop breathing

Cooking with coal is by far the best for me.

It would have been more honest to include the fact that it is leaking from broken stoves. A new correctly fitted stovetop does not do this.

There is a push to remove gas from homes ( UK, New York city) so clean electricity can take its place for cooking / heating. Well we don’t have the clean electricity and these propaganda pieces / studies are just to nudge the consumer, not based in fact.

'higher than we thought'. I don't think so.

nkilvert bilbergie We have East Coast peak conventional gas production. That's why Dom_Perrottet is pushing his Narrabri CSG project. Huge LNG quantities are wasted in exports. Thank MrKRudd and Martin Ferguson for their approvals in Gladstone including fugitive emissions

They know... they have always known

And kerosene home heaters cause lung cancer, as I found out when my sister died from lung cancer never having been a smoker but often satvin front of her heater

In US! They assume its similar in Oz but don’t know. They fail to note Aust appliances have higher standards. Gas is lower emitting than electricity is today or burning wood heaters. Renewable gas is being developed now. Gas employs 165k aussies & underpins 10-15% of GDP.

That may be, but I still maintain that if you cooked a stir-fry on an electric stove, then you either have a cartoonishly powerful electric stove that dims all the lights in the neighbourhood when you switch it on, or actually you cooked a stew.

This study is proudly sponsored by induction cooker companies 😀

I’m pretty sure the results from 53 houses is not considered to be a representative sample

We could go back to briquette stoves I guess. Really good for air quality.

This is GARBAGE! It means that most people have malfunctioning gas appliances + that means that most licensed gas installers/plumbers are incompetent or corrupt ['Our biggest surprise was that most of the methane we measured leaked to the air while the stoves were OFF....']. 🤮

I am building a new house using LPG for the cooktop. Its not methane based CH4 but a mixture of Propane C3H8 and Butane C4H10. Is that safe?

Seriously how did I reach the age I am . Always had a gas cooktop as did my Mum 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thanks for the news article, which has been published before. What are all the gas consumers to do with their gas cookers, heaters etc?

Yup, I get horrible asthma from gas. I can not stay anywhere that has it. It's time to move on past it.

Holy moly

Yeah nah bullshit

Ok. Stop eating, stop driving. Start a new life style by yourself.

Those who cook on gas inside are nuts. Been a know thing for a very long time

Wont be long we’ll all be outside cooking with wood “which is recycled as it regrows) 🤣😂😎🇦🇺

Gas leaks from pipes all over Melbourne.. i don't think the government wants to know about it. (pisses out all over the place)

This is old news. Very old news.

🙄

This is a joke right? Making the average consumer feel guilty about day to day life? Meanwhile any of the 1,000 companies in Australia will expel as much in a day as one would in their entire lifetime

Hardly ever use my burner or oven these days. Microwave and Air fryer is the way electricity is cheaper than gas.

Fk off ABC!!!

If ABC shut down completely emissions should come to zero

Lol 🤣😆🤣😆🤣

But it's 'natural'
