Leader Anthony Albanese will outline a plan to create more than 60,000 new university and TAFE places if Labor wins next year's federal election, with a bold promise of covering the fees of half a million TAFE students over the next four years.

Federal Labor has outlined a billion-dollar plan to create more than 60,000 new university and TAFE places if it wins next year's election, with a bold promise of covering the fees of half a million TAFE students over the next four years. The plan covers the cost of 465,000 TAFE places, including 45,000 new spotsan ambitious 2019 election campaign

that was criticised as having a "cluttered and risky" agenda, the Federal Opposition Leader will on Sunday play to a policy area often considered a traditional strength of the Labor party: education. Anthony Albanese will outline a $1.2 billion education and skills plan as he launches the party's unofficial election campaign, just days after announcing his party'sWith the pandemic further exacerbating a serious skills shortage in Australia, the plan promises to boost workforce participation in struggling sectors, but relies on a future federal Labor government entering a shared funding arrangement with the states and territories.

A key feature of the plan is the promise to cover the cost of 465,000 TAFE places over the forward estimates, in areas hit hardest by COVID-19, like hospitality, tourism and construction.Labor also argues there are not enough university spots to address skills shortages, and to see to that, the party is promising to create up to 20,000 new university places across 2022 and 2023.

Education should have already been a key focus. It shall subsequently make a real difference; in future generations to come.

How you going to pay for it albo? Mm up tax, o yer death taxo but it no on our agenda mm bs

KRudd 2.0! Captain Cheque Book

Same ol', same ol'.... What an unoriginal, myopic vision...

Could have used an up to date photo, Albo looks amazingly fit now. ABC using news corp tactics?

Sounds great

OzFacts And the Liberal PM does this....

School should never cost money.

As usual...Labor promises then forgets...due to Power hungry within the ranks and enjoy overspending and wasting money for UNproductive projects plus corruption as always amongst.

What about outsourcing/insourcing/work&business visa/state&employer sponsored visa/Regional&short&long visa etc. All jobs going to India/Singapore/Asia. 2or3or6 months contracts/temp/casual jobs to Australia and regular/full time jobs to overseas.

So who pays for it? The money has to come from somewhere

Brilliant. Talk about resonance

How desperate is this bloke, you have no chance Daffy Duck.

can you explain how this and all his at her pre election promises are being paid. Just saying they are fully funded is a load of rubbish. Who and how are they paying for it

Hooray! Albo's off and running at last. Intelligent policies this time, focussing on what's been lacking, what business also wants, and where the LNP*s failures are.

Centrelink funded courses as the students finishing 2021 not on government payments pay normal fees ? And is that before or after international students

The best $1.2 billion Australia will ever spend.

Oh yeh Albanese? Well we are giving more free money to foreign businesses in Jobfleecer v.2 when we win the next election.

Oh heck yeah. Labor giving people the opportunity to follow their dreams and upskill with no barrier. Great for the people, great for the economy

Labor always supports TAFE. An institution that keeps our workforce skilled up. Love to see it.

Fast train announcement in 5 4 3…..

Hahaha you introduce fee paying TAFE, and introduce fees for Uni. Then offer one or two for free.

Need more skills based training. Uni places should be targeted at skills and research where we hope to create a strong base for specialised innovation and manufacturing. Time to create an economy not only based on mining.

Theyde walk over this guy ide recon

If you want to run the country like a successful business educating and skilling your own population is how you ensure economic growth and drive innovation. If you want to run the country into the ground you keep the population unskilled unhealthy and indebted.

virgotweet Is it possible to re-take /. nationalise all the TAFE colleges that the LNP gave away (ok, sold for pittances).

TAFE sell-off, like Medicare proceedure slashes & PBS prescription reversions have been going on with little to no notice with this OPAQUE Morrison gov. Australia, our kids/grandchildren will rue the day our TAFE becomes a shell or closures force massive travel requirements‼️

It is a joke, mate

So much needed by so many students!

leselec27 Labor building a better Australia after years of Liberal destruction.

Ain't Nothing Free, Who is going to Pay For It

Does the ABC really believe this tripe? Why don’t you start acting like real journalists and put the blow-torch on him?

Sure Albo. How about a HECS pause & interest pause during covid-19? Excuse me but I don't believe you!

This is why we need AlboForPM 💪🏾💪🏾🙌🏻🙌🏻 AnthonyAlbanese

Yes!

That sounds alright, I'd like to go to TAFE, better myself.

Yeah, bullshit. I’ll believe it when I see it.

Great. Finally move in the right direction.

Finally a glimmer of hope

For people who think this creates debt or deficit, it’s already a known fact that the value created by free tertiary education outpaces any costs, with what would also be spent on HECS payments, going back into the economy. Labor knows what they are doing.

So taxes will be increased then

Not sure that goes far enough. Where's the restoration of a sector gutted by a total withdrawal of support by the current govt? Is AlboMP going to continue charging $14500 per year for a BA? If we're a smart country, Universities & TAFE need strong support.

Brilliant, our TAFE system has been destroyed or neglected for years, this a comprehensive rebuild. Bring them back to the regions & make accessible again, we desperately need apprenticeships for young people in renewables as well as traditional trades.👏👏👏👏

The same LNP ministers, esp those in their 50s and 60s , fully benefited from free Withlam govt education policies , should shut up and support this excellent reform for sake of civililty.

Free tafe!! Brilliant, just Brilliant 👏 😀 👍 AlboForPM

TAFE is a breeding ground for tradies and others

Labor good at throwing money around and creating massive debt but not good at finding the money to pay for it. No one mentions how much debt we have, what is the interest on it, or what payments we make to reduce this debt.

Nothing is free , spending $1.4 billion would be better spent on affordable housing for low income workers.

It’s a magic word that Labor use all the time. “Free” ! When are people going to work out nothing is free as it is paid by tax payers ! Labor is happy to give everything away, keep their pension and leave the country worse off !

Here’s how to save so u can invest

It’s practically free now…

Really the coalition is subsidising university courses that have excess trained people and few jobs Abc journalisming ... humanities while reducing the cost of courses in maths and nursing, to try to encourage people to study in areas where there are job shortages.

So the return in investment means we get skilled workers who are Australians rather than having to get foreigner's to fill jobs.

All governments fail when it’s comes to education. Isn’t education a negotiation pawn?

Free Tafe is much better than Costello's SUV rort. Taxpayer subsidised SUVs. Billions

Is everyone forgetting that Labor have not presented any policies or costings for these promises. Also the deficit Australia is in, doesn't disappear when a new political party takes over, they inherit it. There's no money for any promises made by any party.

Now what would really make a difference if FREE uni and TAFE.

Now that's sounds good. Free for Australians or is this going to be flooded by foreigners & be obviously limited like most options for Australians?

Finally some common sense getting media attention on building a strong economic regrowth.

TAFE has rotted, a lot of the 'teachers' have turned the institution into a stasi where a lot of faculties are staff-centric, not student or outcome focused, and then of course the 'jobs', need to get rid of a lot of those Teacher Assoc mutineers

political_alert Good news week if Labor pull through the next election. Free education is a no brainer considering that a skilled workforce means better industrial outcomes. Australia needs to kickstart new industries using AU trained and paid skilled workers. TAFE is the best option.

Cue boomers and right wing commentators complaining about free education when they were the recipients of one.

'Free'

Isn’t TAFE a state responsibility?

So will they be reversing the obscene money grab for students studying arts, set up by the dodgy old boys club the LNP? tanya_plibersek AlboMP

Good

At last after years of a government depressing and degrading educational opportunities for Australian students a new government actually promising to do something that helps

Definitely great news about TAFE. Hopefully some more diverse engineering based courses will emerge. Because technical service people don't just appear out of thin air.

this is message video For all prime minister Scott Morrison and Jacqui Lambie and the world society Pauline Hanson message videos. For all the world society. visit this is link Jacqui Lambie.

Yep- we need more uni graduates more professional students- very soon will need a uni degree to clean toilets

SallyRMelb Why don't we make higher education free for all Australians. Free vocational education. Free university education. And then maybe we'll stop electing right wing extremists who believe they can feed us fake news on a daily basis.

Good, then hopefully they can fill the vacancies which businesses claim they have cause they don't want to train them themselves and rely on tourist workers.

Good on you AlboForPM 👍

We have lots of University spaces but they are reserved for international students.

This is good. Private training providers have been and ongoing rort for too long.

Much better proposals this time around, I doubt we'll see the same Super reform ideas they had the last time and Tax reform will be quite mild - Pandemic has pretty much forced it to be this way, expect more society building and support services budget promises like this.

political_alert Given that Labor introduced fee-paying TAFE & HECS, it’s the least it could do to return to its roots.

✊🏼✊🏼

Bull 💩💩💩💩💩💩💩

“The government has implemented the JobMaker program” can we get an ABCFactCheck on Josh Frydenberg’s promise on it creating 450,000 jobs. How many did it actually create? 1100

And everyone gets a block of gold. Welcome to more debt than you can ever imagine.

🙄

Free Tafe and dodgy jabs for you Kids...👀👀

Free shit... it works every time.

Is the money coming out of your pocket?

political_alert I did a free tafe diploma as part of the Victorian state scheme - after previously having done a degree in a diff declining area and unable to pay for tafe due to higher qualifications. Whilst people may foo foo the scheme - it's really life changing for many people - inc me

GrogsGamut Sadly you won't hear Greens praising this.

Dont trust anything albo the boofhead will say, they're a big scam

political_alert Hard to argue with education, selfless and a brilliant investment. Keep it up Albo 🇦🇺💪🏻🥂

He hasn't noticed that tradies make more than teachers.

Free tafe, free child care, what else?

Free everything under Lab/Green alliance, dont worry about working thats for lame arses. Dont forget socialism is great until you run out of other peoples money. DictatorDan has already sent state broke and with his abc they will hide it till hell freezes over.

Ahh, election mode. That special time of year, when promises miraculous appear from nowhere, and disappear afterwards just as quick.

thank heavens

It might be free for the student, but taxpayer pays for it.

continue I

Politicians in Aus ATM have 0 credibility. AlboMP is already running a campaign on fairies and unicorn economics. So what dodgy accounting do they plan to employ to meet this goal?
