Ms Cruickshank has conceded at ICAC that Gladys Berejiklian “lied” to her and revealed Ms Berejiklian told her about her secret relationship with Daryl Maguire after Mr Maguire was caught at ICAC in a phone tap seeking a commission from a developer in 2018. The scandal led to Mr Maguire’s resignation from parliament.
“Ms Berejiklian told me about the ‘historical relationship’ shortly after Mr Maguire resigned,” Ms Cruickshank told ICAC. ICAC Counsel Assisting Scott Robertson: “You’re quite clear in your mind that she indicated it had been a historical relationship before she became premier? Ms Cruickshank “Absolutely.”
“What I remember most was the Premier said to me . . . the word historic, I don’t know if she said relationship or friendship but I’m using the word relationship; historic relationship with Mr Maguire, and she quickly said to me. . and it was quick. .pre-empted me asking any questions . . that it was over before she became Premier,” Ms Cruickshank said.
Ms Cruickshank said after a phone call from the department of premier and cabinet in 2018 following the Maguire scandal, she put a callout to all ministerial staff who had suspicions of corrupt conduct by Mr Maguire to report their information to ICAC. Two staff came forward with information, but Ms Berejiklian did not.Ms Berejiklian signed this and wrote: “The Secretary’s note in this instance should be replicated for all future declarations.
