Researchers developing an interactive tour of the Flinders Ranges hope to give future virtual tourists bird's-eye views of the region's most striking vistas, as well as subterranean views of its underlying geology.

While the Flinders Ranges in South Australia's outback are hundreds of millions of years old, the region's rugged landscapes are getting a more contemporary treatment as part of a move to secure lasting global recognition.

The end result, they hope, will allow participants to put on VR headsets to undergo a "journey through deep geological time". "We thought what better way to do it than to create a virtual tour where people can learn about all the fantastic geology, all the fantastic palaeontology, all the stories that really give us an insight into a critical period of Earth's history.
