'Melbourne Airport is the windiest place in the state at the moment, 100km/h was recorded there last night,' one forecaster said. A Qantas flight from LA diverted to Avalon, as the pilot decided that would be safer .

Flights are expected to be delayed as strong and damaging winds hit Melbourne Airport, forcing one Qantas pilot on Friday morning to divert to Avalon due to safety concerns.

Melbourne Tullamarine airport is down to a single runway and is expected stay that way until late morning, causing flight delays throughout the day.A Qantas flight from Los Angeles to Melbourne was diverted after a pilot decided it was safer to land at Avalon airport due to the gusty winds.The airline is now working to fly the passengers back to Tullamarine. The estimated time of arrival for QF094 is now 10.45am, instead of 8.30am.

"Melbourne Airport is the windiest place in the state at the moment, 100km/h was recorded there last night," said Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Keris Arndt on Friday morning.The SES received 110 calls for assistance in the past 24 hours, mainly in Ballarat, the Dandenongs and the Yarra Valley.

The arrivals board at Melbourne airport shows several flights have been delayed by between 30 minutes and an hour. In high winds, air traffic controllers at Melbourne Airport will generally limit operations to a single runway which means they lose a third of their capacity for planes to arrive and depart.
