A 44-year-old Chinese national has been confirmed as the first case of coronavirus in Queensland, bringing the national infected total to seven, as a second person in Victoria is confirmed to have contracted the virus.

The man was taken to a Gold Coast hospital where he will be kept in isolation. China has released its official infected count with 5,974 cases in total with 132 deaths.

In Australia the federal government has unveiled plans to rescue Australians stranded in China's Hubei province where the coronavirus first emerged. Mr Morrison said the government was establishing a quarantine zone on Christmas Island in preparation for the evacuees where people would remain on the island and undergo testing for an estimated 14 days.
