The hottest October weather in over a decade is forecast in south-east Queensland on Monday with the mercury expected to soar over 30 degrees in Brisbane. Hot weather is also expected in western Sydney, with temperatures in Penrith set to hit 31 degrees.

Severe fire danger has been forecast in both states with the NSW Rural Fire Service issuing a total fire ban for northern parts of the state. Authorities are urging residents to stay indoors with warm and windy conditions continuing until a cool change hits later in the week.
