The nation's largest airports have warned domestic airfares could keep rising unless carriers release more seats and offer better deals to the travelling public.
AAA chief executive officer Caroline Wilkie said the nation's domestic carriers were "happy to slug passengers with pricey, uncompetitive airfares" and should open up more seats."The airlines should stop playing games with the public and start offering more affordable airfares," she said. "The best discount fares are 40 per cent lower than ten years ago. The reason they have increased in recent times is airport charges," he said.
"They're arguing airlines would increase their capacity when it [utilisation] is currently at 80 per cent," he said.There were 60.9 million domestic passengers in the 12 months to June 2019, and 77.4 million seats.
