As the writer Siri Hustvedt observes, the people we see in paintings are fictive; they are not flesh and blood. Rather, the painted person is “a thing suffused with another person’s subjectivity”. When men paint women, they inescapably paint them through the male gaze. Picasso’s women are contorted, grotesque, splayed. Rubens’ female nudes are sumptuous, fleshy, inviting.
Women artists have long been frustrated by the male objectification of the female body in art. As feminist art collective The Guerrilla Girls pointedly observed in 1989, “less than 5 per cent of the artists in the modern art sections are women, but 85 per cent of the nudes are female.” British artist Sophie Tea leads body-painted models on a “live Nudie catwalk” for her latest work, Women.The situation has improved since then, and social media appears to be democratising the game even further.
It’s a lot to ask strangers to bare their bodies for you, and Tea, who receives thousands of inquiries from women via nude selfies, says it comes down to creating a “safe space rooted in self-acceptance. It takes so much courage. I’m in awe of them.” Tea began painting female nudes because she’d always felt uncomfortable with her body, as it didn’t live up to those of women on TV or in magazines.
