After a string of disappearances and gory murders, Thai dissident exiles say they're living in fear. A band in Laos has appealed for help, fearing they will be next.

The reported disappearances in Vietnam echo another case in Laos involving three other Thai dissidents.

"The two bodies' hands and feet were bound and their faces smashed beyond recognition," Human Rights Watch reported.Surachai Danwattananusorn has not been seen since last year and his friends presume he was also killed. For years, ultra-royalists, governments and police have used the lese majesty law, which forbids insulting the King, Queen, heir or Regent, but has been used more broadly to cover any perceived slights against the monarchy.

But since that case, there has been a shift in the way the Thai authorities have dealt with royal critics. The two trends — avoidance of lese majesty and deportation from neighbouring countries — can be seen in the treatment of another activist in exile. Ms Praphan was arrested and charged with sedition and belonging to a secret society, but not lese majesty.
