Relieved residents are returning to their homes on the Sunshine Coast, where one home has been destroyed and several others have been damaged during an out-of-control fire in Peregian Beach.

One resident described the force of the firestorm as “incredible”, saying they had minutes to escape the fast-moving blaze.

Despite firefighters gaining ground on the Sunshine Coast bushfire, authorities have warned the reprieve could be short lived as the mercury is set to jump again for the weekend. At least 80 fires are still burning across Queensland and while firefighters were able to gain an upper hand on the Peregian fire, the other fire of concern is on the Gold Coast hinterland. Queensland is enduring the worst spring bushfires the state has seen in 130 years.
