American legal activist Erin Brockovich has turned her sights to Australia's deadly silicosis epidemic, fighting for regulatory changes to protect workers at risk.

Silicosis is a lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust, found in kitchen bench tops and bathroom basins. In March this year, 36-year-old Anthony White from the Gold Coast became the first Australian to die from the disease."These are young people, this is a matter of being more transparent and getting in there and changing policies, before it does become the next mesothelioma," Ms Brockovich said today.Doctors diagnosed him with silicosis and determined the disease had been caused by decades of inhaling silica dust. His family has fought for compensation.
